SAMTA Student Recital Policies

Lisa Malek, chair

·        Participating students must be students of San Antonio Music Teacher Association members.

·        Recitals are held on Sunday afternoons. Please check the SAMTA 2010-2011 Calendar for specific dates and times. The Recital Coordinator must approve any changes to this schedule.

·        Students may perform only once in a given recital. Soloists are expected to have their music memorized. Teachers may not perform on these programs for any reason, unless accompaniment is required. No photocopies of music scores will be permitted not even for accompanists.

·        There is a 5 minute time-limit for each student participating in the Trick or Treat, Just Boys, and Wee Folks recitals. There is a 10-minute time limit per student for the Back to School and Masterworks recitals.

·        A SAMTA teacher may enter a maximum of 7 students per recital with a total playing time of no more than 35 minutes. Exception: for the February Valentine Duet and Ensemble Recital, the maximum of 7 students per teacher does not apply. However, the 35 minute time limit for students of any one teacher does apply to this recital.

·        The SAMTA Board of Directors recommends that students participating in the Wee Folks Recital should not exceed 8 years of age.

·        Teachers are expected to instruct students and their families about recital etiquette, i.e. conduct, bowing, etc.

·        Recital entries must be entered no later than ten days prior to the recital. Late entries will not be considered; nor will “telephone’ conversations suffice for recital information.

·        Entries are handled on a first come / first served basis. There may be no duplications on a given recital.

Please note: Recitals with more than 25 participants may be divided in order to ensure that there is sufficient space for all participants and family members to have a place to sit in the recital hall. In these cases, the recital times will be modified to accommodate the division. The sponsor will contact each participating teacher with information concerning the time at which his or her students will be scheduled to perform. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Tips For Making The Most Of Student Affiliate Recitals

  1. Think of the Back to School recital as an excellent motivator to get students back into the routine of practicing if their practice and lessons were sporadic throughout the summer. Knowledge of an upcoming performance opportunity is also a good motivation for students to continue to practice throughout the summer months.  Pieces have to be memorized; no music is allowed except for the Valentine Duet Recital and Ensemble or duets.  If the student shows up with his/her music they will be asked not to use it.
  2. For the Trick or Treat recital, students may wear costumes to match the mood or theme of their selection. Typically, small prizes are given for costumes. For example, cutest, scariest, most thematic, etc. Costumes are not by any means required, but in the past the students have seemed to enjoy this element of the Trick or Treat recital.
  3. Only male students should be entered in the Just Boys recital. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase how cool it can be for young men to play musical instruments
  4. It is suggested that entrants in the Wee Folks recital be no more than 8 years old.
  5. Local winners of the Original Composition contest are required to have their compositions performed on the Original Composition recital held in conjunction with the Wee Folks recital. However, they are not required to perform themselves and are free to enlist the assistance of friends in the performance of their compositions. Please indicate any such information on the entry card. The Student (composer) must be a Student Affiliate Member.
  6. The Valentine Duet and Ensemble recital is the hope of the board to provide an opportunity to both introduce piano students to the wonderful world of ensemble playing, and to attract participation from other instrumentalists. If you have a student that participates in UIL solo and ensemble, this would be a perfect opportunity for that student and his or her ensemble partners to practice performing together. Please indicate on the entry form for this recital the number of performers for each selection, the names of all performers and their teachers, and any additional equipment (including music stands and chairs) that need to be provided.
  7. Selections for the Masterworks recital should be chosen from the literature of the great composers. Many composers have at least a few keyboard pieces that are accessible to late elementary players, thereby keeping this recital accessible to most students.
  8. Finally, variety is the spice of life! Please remember that these recitals are not intended to be limited to piano students. We would love to hear more guitar, strings, and woodwinds students participate. It would be great fun to have at least one brass or percussion performance this year as well. Additionally, duets and ensembles are welcome at any recital.  When you enter duets and ensembles, please ensure that you indicate on your entry the names of all students in the ensemble and whether more than one piano or any additional equipment is needed. Please note that some recital locations may be unable to provide more than one piano, and most have room for no more than two pianos on the stage.
