Each
year, over 1300 Texas music students in nearly 100 ensembles perform at the TMTA
State Convention in June, easily making the ensemble program the largest, most
popular Student Affiliate convention event.
Please
refer to the TMTA-SA Handbook for more information, or contact the Convention
Ensembles Coordinator.
SAMTA
is allowed to have two Texas-American (elementary-middle school) and one High
School ensemble perform at the State Convention. Twenty to thirty students is
the maximum number of students in each ensemble. Repertoire and directors will
be announced at the first general meeting and in the Ritornello.
Students
who wish to participate in the ensembles must meet the following criteria:
- Be
a current Student Affiliate member.
- Pass the TMTA
Music Theory Test AT ONE LEVEL BELOW CURRENT GRADE IN SCHOOL OR THE 4th
GRADE TEST, WHICHEVER IS LOWER.
- Learn the
ensemble music BEFORE auditions, which are by appointment with the directors
in February.
- Pay a
non-refundable $25 participation fee at the first scheduled rehearsal of the
ensemble. This fee covers the $10 TMTA ensemble participation fee and helps
defray some of the ensemble director’s convention expenses (travel,
costume).
- Attend all but
one scheduled rehearsal. Rehearsals are normally held twice a month from
April up to the State Convention.
- Provide their
own costumes which are selected by the directors and parents.
- Attend the dress
rehearsal at the convention site.
Failure
to meet any of the criteria may mean dismissal from the ensemble program.
Alternates:
After the maximum number of allowable students has been reached for a particular
ensemble, remaining students may be designated alternates. Alternates must
attend all but one scheduled rehearsal. Alternates who do not perform at the
convention will have their participation fee refunded.
